In 1881, Edouard Manet announced to his friends that he had discovered the true colour of the atmosphere. “It’s violet”, he said; “fresh air is violet”.

Well then, I thought to myself, if fresh air is violet, I shall paint violet. Thus emerged, Whisperings. The colours are far more delicate than any other palette in the collection. I wanted to give the impression of calm, lightness, of early-morning-first-glimpses of the garden. Nature does not always need to be loudly pronouncing. It can beckon us gently, soft like secrets whispered between lovers.
