When I started to envision works for this exhibition, I held the words bold, fresh, bright, unapologetic. I read and re-read Mary Oliver’s Mysteries, Yes!. I resonated so much with her encouragement to look up and around in astonishment to the magic of life, of nature. The energy from her words fuelled Making Waves, the first painting in the collection. I started painting grevillea but felt that my process was too delicate and constrained for what I wanted to achieve. I envisioned big sweeping gestures and contrasting colours so I worked with the idea of waratahs and this painting emerged: bold magenta and Australian gold, bright greens and hints of blue sky. A truly bold and vibrant work.
