Land / Story
JOY ENGELMAN
August 30 - September 26
When I sit in the landscape, I am always drawn to the patterns and energy flows of the various forces of nature. I trace the path that water makes as it forms gullies, rivers, waterholes and billabongs, I watch the salt form on salt lakes in ribbons flowing around the edges, I am intrigued by how the rocks and escarpments are formed by winds and rains, and how the sun colours the land as it sets in the west staining the landscape with deep oranges and reds.
My favourite time of day is the early morning sunrise with all of it’s deep shadows and the colours that form, and again in the evening….
Over the years, I have sat enchanted in the outback and the desert watching the glistening and glittering of metals, crystals and dew drops and have been amazed at how intricate and delicate all these abstract patterns make up the larger picture.
Recent explorations have included the use of metallic paints, glass powders and iridescent colours in my work as I try to mimic nature’s own excitement and beauty.
I hope you find these works fascinating as they can change with the time of day, the type of lighting and the angle you view them. May you get many hours of pleasure watching them change in the same way as the desert landscape changes. _____ JOY
