MILLE - FEUILLES

Jamila Hume

March 1 - April 3 2021

JAMILA HUME As a child, Jamila grew up between the UK, Morocco and Canada. While nomadic and radically different socially, the common thread that grounded her throughout her childhood was nature.
Time and again, she found herself outdoors roaming her grandfather's farm in Morocco, the Cheshire hills outside her grandmother's home, and the magnificent coastal mountains of British Columbia.
Mille-feuilles pays homage to the colours, aromas, gestures and the pause extended to us by nature in full bloom. Ten of the 12 paintings were painted in 2020, ‘The Year That Was’. Many of us were isolated, indoors and removed from our daily doses of greenery and delights. It is Jamila's hope that the paintings in this collection encourage a pause from the haste that is our 24/7 life; that the colours, gestural strokes of the palette knife and subject matter remind the viewer of the beauty in our natural environment. Taking a step back, the composition reveals itself with ease. However, the true enchantment is in the details; in the nuanced flirtations of a line that creates a new colour, a new emotion. Jamila’s overarching narrative being beauty can be found in the small things, through both life and art itself.
